Arbor Teas was delighted to join friends at a special fundraiser on November 7 to support the Clowns without Borders expedition to India, one of largest tea producing countries in the world. Clowns without Borders (a 501(c)3 nonprofit) offers laughter to relieve the suffering of all persons, especially children, who live in areas of crisis including refugee camps, conflict zones and territories in situations of emergency. It brings levity, contemporary clown/circus oriented performances and workshops into communities so that they can celebrate together and forget for a moment the tensions that darken their daily lives. This specific expedition, “Project Muskurahat” (Smile), just left for India and will be working with children affected by HIV/AIDS and poverty in the slums and rural areas surrounding Mumbai. Check out their daily journal entries at http://clownswithoutborders.org/2009/11/india-2009/.
The fundraiser was a wonderful event in which a dozen Southeastern Michigan artists came together to create an informal evening of entertainment at the Wild Swan Theatre in Ann Arbor, MI. The show featured the acclaimed Srishti Dances of India, Wild Swan Theatre, Brass Tacks Ensemble, Sumkali and the Vocal Experiment (UM-Dearborn). Samosas, sweet treats, and Arbor Teas’ Indian Korakundah Estate Nilgiri Black Tea were served throughout the evening!

After a very rigorous screening process, we are pleased to announce that Arbor Teas is now a member of Green America’s Green Business Network! The Green Business Network is the green business program of Green America, the nation’s leading non-profit educator on socially and environmentally responsible consumption and investing. Green America’s mission is to harness economic power—the strength of consumers, businesses and the marketplace—to create a socially just and environmentally sustainable society. Companies are only eligible for membership in the Green Business Network™ if they are found to be:
- using business as a tool for social change;

We are deeply honored to be included in this select directory of the nation’s most progressive businesses, and view it as further validation of the intense focus Arbor Teas maintains on matters of sustainability and social justice. Arbor Teas is proud to be working with Green America to advance their mission.

On May 25, 2009, Cyclone Aila made landfall in southern Bangladesh and eastern India. The Times of India reported that the storm took an unusual turn directly to the north, causing it to rip through areas rarely affected by tropical storms, including the famed Makaibari Tea Estate in India’s Darjeeling region. A relief effort is underway to help the managers, workers and families at Makaibari who were affected by Cyclone Aila, and Arbor Teas has committed to raising whatever funds it can to assist in rebuilding effort.

This year’s Ann Arbor Green Fair (the 9th annual!) was bigger and better than ever! Arbor Teas was honored to be a part of it for a second year, and happy to see so many customers (new and old) come by and say “hi!” The organic iced tea was really flowing – several hundred samples were doled out in just three hours! We were sampling both our organic kukicha green tea and our organic pomegranate white tea that day. While it was a close call, the crowd favorite seemed to be the pomegranate white, although there were an awful lot of “purists” who really favored the fresh, crisp green tea flavor of the kukicha (it was the GREEN Fair, after all…).
As a fun sidenote, we had another little “Free Tea for a Year” contest during this year’s Green Fair. Well, we are excited to announce that the winner is Jennifer R. of Ann Arbor, MI. She will begin receiving monthly installments of organic loose leaf tea through the Arbor Teas Tea of the Month Club! Congratulations, Jennifer!!!

This year’s Ann Arbor Film Festival was a huge success, and we at Arbor Teas were thrilled to be a part of it for a second year! It was such a pleasure to see all of our friends there again (new and old!), and an honor to serve up our organic loose leaf teas for all to enjoy. This year, the hands-down winner of the festival was our Raspberry Green Tea! We simply couldn’t brew enough of the stuff (and we’re talking gallons and gallons and gallons)!
As a fun sidenote, we had a little contest going throughout the festival. Well, we are excited to announce that the winner of our “Free Tea for a Year” drawing is Laura R. of Ann Arbor, MI. She has already begun receiving monthly installments of organic loose leaf tea through the Arbor Teas Tea of the Month Club! Congratulations, Laura!!!

We’re happy to report that Natural Health Magazine has come to learn what so many of our customers already know: that Arbor Teas offers top-quality organic teas at reasonable prices! In their most recent issue, they named our Fair Trade, organic Jasmine Green Tea a “Best Buy.” Thanks, NHM!

Our friend and loyal customer Olivia M. recently pointed out that our Pomegranate White Tea was included in a lineup of Fair Trade Certified Teas featured in Vegetarian Times Magazine this month! Because we can’t possibly scour every publication in print and on the web, we encourage all of you out there to keep your eyes peeled for Arbor Teas references in the media – if you find something particularly juicy (that we weren’t already aware of) we might make it your while!

We hope you’ll excuse this little bit of on-line bragging, but sometimes the praise we get from the blogosphere is just too good not to share… Last month, Arbor Teas was highlighted on the Michigan Innovators website, which is dedicated to highlighting those people and businesses that are taking innovative steps to move Michigan’s economy forward. “Even if you do not consider yourself “passionate” about tea, the Arbor Teas website is more than just a product catalog, it is a tea experience.” Click here to read more about Michigan Innovators impressions of Arbor Teas. Hopefully you’ll agree!
