What is Matcha?

What is Matcha?

Matcha is a type of Japanese green tea that is stone ground at the end of the manufacturing process, resulting in an ultra-fine tea powder.

Traditionally used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony, Matcha is typically whisked in hot water until a frothy consistency is reached and sipped directly from the bowl. When you drink Matcha you consume the entire tea leaf, rather than only the brew of the leaf. 

Follow this step by step guide to make one bowl of Matcha at home.

Measure Your Matcha

Step One: Measure approximately 1/2 teaspoon of ceremonial grade Matcha.* If you are using a bamboo Matcha scoop (chashaku), measure 1-2 almond sized scoops.

Sift the Matcha through a sieve into a small bowl. 

We recommend sifting the Matcha to prevent clumping; however, the Matcha can also be placed directly into your bowl without sifting.

*Note: We suggest using the ceremonial grade Matcha rather than the cooking grade Matcha because it is less bitter and smoother.   However, the cooking grade Matcha can be used as well.

Step Two: Heat a little less than 1/2 cup water (3 oz) until 180 degrees.

If you don’t have a thermometer handy to measure your water temperature, don’t worry! Heat the water until bubbles have formed on the bottom of your heating vessel - this is approximately 180 degrees.

Step Three: Add the heated water to your bowl of Matcha.

Whisk vigorously in a back-and-forth motion using a traditional bamboo Matcha whisk (chasen) or regular kitchen whisk, until frothy. 

If you are a using a bamboo Matcha whisk, do not press the whisk against the bottom of the bowl while whisking.

After whisking, the Matcha is ready to drink directly from the bowl. Depending on personal preference, add more water to adjust for desired taste. Remember to add more water only after whisking.
