How to Make Chai, Matcha & Tea Lattes

Welcome to the wonderful world of tea lattes! Foamy and creamy, laden with tea goodness and a comforting dollop of dairy. There are few things better, which is why we have provided you with a variety of step-by-step guides on how to make your own at home!

How to Make Chai Lattes

Delicious chai lattes have become a staple in American coffee shops. But there’s nothing quite like making one at home. Similar to a latte made with espresso, the chai latte combines frothy milk with a concentrated brew of tea. Skip the cafe and follow this step by step guide to make your own 8 oz. chai latte at home.

For a traditional chai latte, use our Masala Chai Black Tea. For a caffeine-free version, try our Masala Chai Rooibos.

Step One: Measure Your Loose Tea

Start by measuring twice the amount of loose leaf tea you would normally use for one cup of tea. Look at the label on the back of your Arbor Teas bag to find our suggested serving size for one 8 oz cup of tea, then double it. For a stronger tea latte, triple the amount of tea.

Place the tea in an infuser or do-it-yourself paper filter bag, and then place the filter bag or infuser in your mug.  Or place the tea directly in your brewing vessel and strain later.

Step Two: Steep Your Tea

Next, make a super strength brew by steeping your tea in 1/2 cup boiling water. Simply pour your heated water over the tea-filled filter bag or infuser. Be sure the tea is covered completely with water. Steep for five minutes, then remove the filter bag/infuser or strain.

Step Three: Heat Your Milk

While your tea is brewing, heat 1/2 cup milk until steaming. If you would like foam on your latte, use our simple milk frother or electric milk frother to froth the milk.

Step Four: Add Heated Milk & Sweetener

Finally, pour the heated milk into your mug with the tea brew and add sugar or honey to taste.

A traditional Masala Chai Latte uses honey to sweeten.

How to Make Matcha Lattes

A bright green matcha latte is not only beautiful, but a delicious treat to be savored. A simple variation on the tea latte, the matcha latte combines matcha green tea with hot milk for a tasty and visually appealing drink. A matcha latte is perfect for those who find straight matcha too bitter or strong - adding the milk really transforms the tea! Follow this step by step guide to make your own 8 oz matcha latte at home.

Step One: Measure & Sift Your Matcha

Start by measuring ½ - 1 teaspoon cooking grade matcha. If you are using a bamboo matcha scoop (chashaku), measure 2-4 almond sized scoops. Sift the Matcha through a sieve into your mug. We recommend sifting the matcha to prevent clumping. You can, of course, put the matcha directly into your mug without sifting, but clumping may occur.

Step Two: Whisk Your Matcha

Next, make a super strong slurry by adding 1/3 cup boiling water to the matcha in your mug. Whisk the matcha and water together until the Matcha is suspended in the water. If you do not have a whisk, stir with a spoon vigorously!

Step Three: Heat & Froth Your Milk

Heat 2/3 cup milk until steaming. If you would like foam on your latte, try using our simple milk frother or electric milk frother to froth the milk.

Step Four: Add Heated Milk and Sweetener

Finally, pour the heated milk into your mug with the matcha and add sugar or honey to taste. Of course, don’t be afraid to experiment with ratios of matcha to milk. After all, it should taste good to you!

How To Make Tea Lattes

While chai and matcha lattes seem to mostly steal the show, you can make tea lattes out of almost any of our teas! The creations are endless and delicious. Similar to a latte made with espresso, the tea latte combines frothy milk with a concentrated tea infusion. Follow this step by step guide to make your own 8 oz tea latte at home!

For the best tea lattes, we recommend using a strongly flavored tea. For example, a bold black tea will work better than a subtly flavored white tea. Here are a few ideas to get you started:
